Consider a Business Blog

If you’re a business operating in the online space, chances are you have considered blogging.   Blogging is not a new concept; as individuals we have been using blogs to communicate with our friends, family and communities for some time now.  In recent years, however, business blogs have gained more credibility and are now seen as a viable way to connect with customers.

Business blogs serve many purposes and have a range of benefits, including:

  • Allowing you to reach customers, whether they’re existing or potential, in an informal way.
  • Providing the opportunity to receive real-time feedback from your customers.
  • As part of a search engine optimisation campaign a blog is a highly effective way to improve rankings and traffic by giving you additional content, keyword and linking opportunities.
  • Providing social media marketing opportunities; your blog could be linked to from other blogs, Facebook, MySpace etc.
  • Forming a sense of community and encouraging active participation with your company brand.
  • Allowing you to go beyond the standard content of your website to supply useful information to your visitors.
  • Encouraging you to keep the content on your website fresh and appealing.  This is great for the visitor and for search engines.
  • Giving you the opportunity to share your expert opinion or knowledge with customers, employees and the community.
  • Enabling you to manage any online reputation management issues.
  • Publishing newsworthy stories or discussing industry news.

The business blog has had its critics and the value of such a campaign has been questioned time and again.  However more and more business are now recording the benefits of this type of social media, and more and more business are starting to use social media as a business strategy.

Business blogs are easy to maintain and provide low-cost marketing with a very wide reach.  You can incorporate a blog into an existing website or have a separate presence for your site vs your company’s blog.  Blogs offer versatility and the ability to be dynamic with content.

For small- to medium-sized businesses in New Zealand, blogging is fast becoming part of the online marketing arsenal.   If you are already part of the blogosphere then take the time to review how well it’s working for you.  If you’re just getting into the game, the key is consistency.  Keep the content fresh and flowing and you will have the visitors following.
